Yes. Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists can bill for reimbursement by using standard CPT codes as appropriate for the services rendered. Nurses and Massage Therapists are usually precluded from using CPT (billing) codes and receiving reimbursement. However, some private insurance companies may make an exception.

Yes. Physical Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapy Assistants are able to work as Certified Lymphedema Therapists even if their supervising Physical Therapist/Occupational Therapist is not certified. The same rules between PT/PTA and OT/OTA apply, meaning that the PT or OT will conduct the evaluation, set the plan of care.  The lymphedema certified PTA or OTA will carry out the plan of care on the patient. We recommend that the assistant is present at the time of evaluation and give guidance since they have the knowledge and skill.

Klose Training offers a number of FREE educational videos that are available to give the supervising PTs and OTs some foundational knowledge to understand the condition of lymphedema its therapy. We recommend the 4-part series “Lymphedema 101” and “Effective CDT: The Inconvenient Truth” found on our Videos Page.
