Head and Neck Lymphedema Management

This newly updated (May, 2020) online course addresses the clinical management of patients with lymphedema of the head and neck following surgery and/or radiation therapy for cancer. The content includes a lecture on the sequelae related to cancer treatment followed by a thorough discussion of the role of appropriate therapeutic post-operative and post-radiation intervention. Compression therapy applications as well as techniques of manual lymph drainage (MLD) for patients with lymphedema of the head and neck are demonstrated in great detail. Additional rehabilitation considerations, including therapy for trismus and shoulder dysfunction, are also covered.

This course is open to Certified Lymphedema Therapists who are graduates of a lymphedema training program of at least 135 hours. Proof of your initial MLD/CDT training course/program must be provided to Klose Training before access to the course can be provided.

By engaging with the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify surgical and radiation therapy effects that lead to secondary lymphedema of the head and neck.
  • Recognize the unique treatment challenges associated with patients with lymphedema of the head and neck.
  • Identify the procedures for assessing the need for compression therapy in patients with lymphedema of the head and neck and choosing the appropriate compression application.
  • Identify specialized MLD techniques for patients with lymphedema of the head and neck, including intra-oral therapy.
  • Recognize the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach in the diagnosis and management of patients with head and neck cancers and subsequent lymphedema.

Course access is NOT immediate due to the need to ensure that the prerequisites are met and to allow for hand processing of the order. Upon registration and payment of the course fee, you will be emailed a Student Agreement within 3 business days. Once the Agreement is electronically signed by you and emailed back to Klose Training, a username and password for accessing the online course will be emailed to you within 3 business days. You will have 3 MONTHS of access to the online course from the time the access information is emailed to you.

NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the skills acquired in this class are within their scope of practice.

This course totals up to 7.5 contact hours and has been approved for 7.5 CE hours for Physical and Occupational Therapists, and 6.0 CE hours for Massage Therapists by the organizations and states listed here. Online course hours are also approved for Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) re-certification.

To receive a Certificate of Completion, the student must be a licensed health care professional and watch all video portions of the course, pass an online quiz with a score of 75% or better, and return the required documents specified in the course. The Certificate will then be emailed to the student.
