Course Objectives (2015)
- Identify surgical and radiation therapy effects that lead to secondary lymphedema of the head and neck.
- Understand the unique treatment challenges associated with patients with lymphedema of the head and neck.
- Assess the need for compression therapy in patients with lymphedema of the head and neck and choose the appropriate compression application from a variety of recommendations.
- Utilize specialized MLD techniques for patients with lymphedema of the head and neck, including intra-oral therapy.
- Understand the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach in the diagnosis and management of patients with head and neck cancers and subsequent lymphedema.
- Identify new approaches and reinforce existing practices by observing expert lymphedema therapists perform patient assessments and treatments on patients with clinically complex lymphedema cases.
- Understand the medical and psychological complexity of patients with obesity-associated lymphedema, lipedema and combination cases.
- Identify surgical considerations for patients with gynecological cancer and recognize the risk for developing lymphedema after gynecological surgeries.
- Acquire knowledge gained from an expert assessment of clinically complex lymphedema cases.
- Recognize the coping mechanisms of patients suffering from morbid obesity and lymphedema.
- Identify behavior modification strategies for patients with morbid obesity and lymphedema.
