Course Description:
A Physician’s Lecture on Lymphedema provides an excellent overview of lymphedema and its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis. This course is beneficial for all medical professionals who want to learn about this prevalent disease but are unable to commit to completing a lymphedema therapy certification course. The online Physician’s Lecture is also beneficial for medical doctors who need to know about lymphedema, but are not interested in studying the manual techniques required for treating lymphedema. Your host, Kathleen Francis, MD, explains lymphedema in the most understandable manner, making it easy and interesting to follow along. Upon completion of the course, the learner will:
- Understand the definition of lymphedema
- Understand the difference between primary and secondary lymphedema
- Understand the causes of primary and secondary lymphedema
- Be able to differentiate between a variety of peripheral edemas
- Understand the medical indications and contraindications for Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
- Be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of infections in patients with lymphedema
Course access is NOT immediate due to the need to ensure that the prerequisites are met and to allow for hand processing of the order. Upon registration and payment of the course fee, you will be emailed a Student Agreement within 3 business days. Dr. Kathleen Francis is the Clinical and Medical Director of the St. Barnabas ACC Lymphedema Treatment Center in Livingston, NJ and Medical Director for Klose Training & Consulting. She currently treats patients in her private practice with a special focus on lymphedema.
Dr. Francis graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ in 1989. Her past clinical positions include Director of Outreach Services, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, 1996–2004; Clinical Director, Kessler-Lerner Lymphedema Services, 1997–2004; and Clinical Director, ALS Clinic Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, 1994–2004. She is a member of the St. Barnabas Breast Program Leadership Committee and Cancer Committee. She is also a member of the American Lymphedema Framework Project steering committee, and is a member of the medical advisory committee of the National Lymphedema Network.
Among Dr. Francis’ many awards and honors, she has been selected for Best Doctors of New York, New York Magazine; New Jersey’s Best Doctors, NJ Monthly magazine; Castle Connolly New York Metro Area Top Doctors; Inside New Jersey magazine Top Doctors; and Best Doctors in America database. She was named by U.S. News & World Report as among the top 1% of physicians in her specialty.
Dr. Francis has lectured extensively in numerous clinical and academic settings across the nation, including at hospitals, patient seminars, webinars, and numerous medical conferences including the biennial National Lymphedema Network conferences.

Note: Persons without a medical background who are interested in learning about lymphedema are also invited to register for this online course, but will not receive continuing education hours/credits.

This course totals 10.5 contact hours and has been approved for CEUs for Physical, Occupational, and Massage Therapists by the organizations and states listed
here. Online course hours are also approved for Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) re-certification.
To receive a Certificate of Completion, the student must be a licensed health care professional and watch all video portions of the course, pass an online quiz with a score of 80% or better, and return the required documents specified in the course. The Certificate will then be emailed to the student.
