No prior lymphedema certification is required!
Course Description:
This course provides a practical and empowering overview of the essential breast cancer knowledge needed by clinicians, medical caregivers, and fitters involved in the care of people with breast cancer. We’ll begin with key breast cancer facts, including encouraging trends in survival rates and how advancements in detection and treatment continue to improve patient outcomes. You’ll learn how to recognize potential signs of breast cancer recurrence early and understand when to refer patients back to their oncology team.
We will review the common effects of breast surgery, plastic surgery procedures, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy—highlighting what is typical, what is concerning, and how these treatments influence recovery and function. The course also covers how to identify both truncal and upper-extremity lymphedema and when to initiate appropriate referrals and compression therapy.
Although the topic of breast cancer is serious, this course offers engaging, occasionally humorous teaching to help you understand and retain the material, and enjoy the learning process along the way. Throughout the course, you’ll discover specific, meaningful ways you can positively impact the lives of your breast cancer patients—helping them navigate treatment, recovery, and long-term wellness with confidence and compassionate care.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Gain a solid understanding of essential oncology concepts, such as the different types of cancers, how benign and malignant tumors differ, common metastasis patterns in breast cancer, and when to notify medical caregivers of concerning signs in your patients and clients.
- Recognize how breast cancer surgery affects your patients and clients, and understand how you can positively impact their quality of life while ensuring they receive appropriate care for treatment-related issues and symptoms.
- Grasp the distinctions between axillary lymph node dissection and sentinel lymph node biopsy, along with their postoperative impacts such as axillary web syndrome, cellulitis, and lymphedema, and when to ensure patients return to their oncology medical team for further assessment and treatment.
- Understand the early and late effects of radiation therapy for breast cancer and identify various DME devices and garments that can improve soft tissue fibrosis, breast, trunk, and arm lymphedema, body image, posture, and balance.
- Expand your understanding of chemotherapy—how it works, why exercise is essential during treatment, the range of potential side effects, and the appropriate times to refer patients back to medical caregivers to support comprehensive care and quality of life.
