In 1990, Dr. Herbst received her PhD in in Cell Physiology at the University of Iowa where she studied the editing step of protein synthesis. She went on to receive her Medical Degree from Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in 1996. Dr. Herbst has over 15 years of experience clinically evaluating fat and is now considered an expert in fat disorders such as Madelung’s disease, Dercum’s disease, lipedema and familial multiple lipomatosis +/- angiolipomatosis
Dr. Herbst is a founding member of the Fat Disorders Research Society, 501c3, established in 2009, and she remains on its medical board. She is now the director of the TREAT program to help Treatment, Research and Education for Adipose Tissue Disorders, after having received a donation from the Lipedema Foundation. She is also supported by a $10,000 yearly donation by the Rhode Island Dercum’s Research Fund, Inc., and donations over the years from many patients and their families. Dr. Herbst received the Humanitarian Award for Medical Research of Rare Tissue Disorders at the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2015 for her work in fat disorders.
